La Paz
The district of La Paz is set above the town of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife with breathtaking views over the Orotava Valley and Mount Teide.
It’s a bustling residential area with a wide selection of restaurants offering tapas and traditional Canarian cuisine and one of Puerto’s top restaurants; Magnolia. There are two large supermarkets offering fresh meat, fish and vegetables as well as everything else you could need. One of them, a Spar, also stocks a wide range of UK label goods. In the evenings, some of the restaurants and bars offer live music and there are two nightclubs.
The first thing that strikes you as you enter La Paz is how green it is; the streets are lined with an abundance of elegant tropical trees and trailing bougainvillea and its two small plazas and even the roundabouts are filled to capacity with cacti, palms and beautiful tropical plants.
In deference to the island’s history, many of its houses and apartments have been built in traditional Canarian style with carved wooden balconies while others are in Moorish style with smooth, domed, white turrets.
At the top of Camino San Amaro is the Mirador de La Paz which affords stunning views right across Puerto de la Cruz from Lago Martiánez to the harbour along the sea front, and stretching back to Casino Taoro and the valley beyond.
Opposite the mirador, the little Church of Paroquia de San Amaro dates from the 16th century.
The Botanical Gardens on Calle Retama were created by Royal Decree on 17th August 1788. The gardens were set up to house exotic plants and trees from America, Africa and Asia, allowing them to acclimatize before travelling on to the planned palatial gardens of King Carlos lll in mainland Spain. Unfortunately for Spain but fortunately for Tenerife, the Spanish winters proved too harsh for the un-hardy specimens and the project was abandoned, leaving over 5000 trees and shrubs to flourish in Puerto de la Cruz. Take a stroll on the hottest of days to really appreciate the cool magnificence of its rich canopy which acts as a natural sound barrier and creates an oasis of tranquillity.
The Agatha Christie Connection Agatha Christie’s short story; “The Man from the Sea” was set in Puerto de la Cruz. Although she doesn’t mention Puerto in the text, the location is clear and she does cite the house of La Paz. Centred around a suicide from the cliffs at La Paz, it was one of a collection of short stories first printed in 1930 under the collective title “The Mysterious Mr Quin”. In it, the author introduces the eponymous Mr Quin whom she considered to be her favourite character. 2007 was the 80th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s visit to the Canary Islands, and Puerto de la Cruz marked the occasion by staging the first International Agatha Christie Festival and erecting a bust of Agatha in the little park in front of the Mirador La Paz. The house of La Paz is just along the street from the Mirador, opposite the newly re-named Calle Agatha Christie.
Bollullo Beach; a well kept secret, Bollullo beach is reached by a lovely coastal walk from La Paz and offers three secluded (one of them for nudists), sandy cove beaches beneath the cliffs.
:
A pretty walkway and a series of steps lead from the end of Camino San Amaro into the town; a ten minute walk (longer coming back up!).
